Summary of Compression Artifacts
Statistics, spectrograms essentially unaffected at rates above 3 bits/sample.
Lossy compression generally removes signal “noise,” improves SNR.
At low rates compression gradually reduces average power of signal.
TEC estimates accurate to better than +/- 10% at rates down to 0.5 bits/sample.
Power-autocorrelation 1/e widths are sensitive to signal energy loss at moderate-to-low bit rates.
Power-autocorrelation secondary peak lag in twin-pulse events is accurate to better than +/- 2% even at rates as low as 0.25 bits/sample.
